We know that inequities existed before the pandemic; we know they have increased since the pandemic. And yet, in their Grand Challenge: Balance the Equation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation describes Algebra 1 as the most important on-track indicator of a students’ future success in the US. Students who don’t complete Algebra 1 have a one-in-five chance of graduating from high school. Inequities in math achievement for priority students are not unique to the USA.
